My name is Thomas Hunt, I’m a third year medical student from Cardiff University. In collaboration with a handful of students from the University of Namibia (UNAM) along with other healthcare students from Cardiff, I am going to be involved in creating a public health campaign with the 40 students from J.A.Nel High School, Keetmanshoop. The aim of our project is for the children to gain a better understanding of cardiovascular disease and how to prevent it. By the end of the two week UniCamp we hope to have created a functioning website to serve as a platform for educating the wider community about the promotion of good heart health.
The public health stream of UniCamp will consist of a number of small group workshops in which we will explore different modifiable factors which may increase ones risk of developing cardiovascular disease. We will use a variety of interactive lesson plans on topics such as smoking, alcohol and diet to facilitate the creation of the campaign. We also hope to teach some basic first aid including resuscitation and taking blood pressure. As a student myself, I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to not only impart knowledge but also to learn a lot myself.
